Best Time to Start a Remodel on the South Shore

You have been thinking about a remodel for months. The kitchen is outdated. The bathroom needs a gut job. The deck is rotting. You know what you want, but you are not sure when to start. On the South Shore of Massachusetts, timing your remodel around the seasons makes a real difference in cost, speed, and how smoothly the project goes. Here is what you need to know.

Late Winter and Early Spring: Best Time to Plan

January through March is the best time to start the planning process, not the construction. Contractors on the South Shore are less busy in winter. You can get more attention during design consultations, receive more detailed quotes, and lock in scheduling before the spring rush hits.

Use this time to:

  • Meet with a contractor and discuss scope
  • Finalize your design and material selections
  • Get permits submitted (permit review in towns like Hingham, Cohasset, and Scituate can take several weeks)
  • Order materials with long lead times (custom cabinets, special-order windows, stone countertops)

If you wait until April to start planning, you are competing with every other homeowner who just had the same idea. Contractors book out weeks or months ahead. Starting the planning in February puts you at the front of the line.

Spring: Best Time to Start Exterior Work

March through May is ideal for exterior projects: decks, siding, roofing, and additions. The weather is warming up, the ground is thawing, and the days are getting longer.

For deck building on the South Shore, spring is the sweet spot. You get the work done before summer so you can actually use the deck during the warm months. Coastal towns like Scituate and Hull see higher demand for deck work because of the waterfront homes and exposure to salt air that beats up existing decks faster.

If your project involves digging (foundation work for additions, footings for a new porch), the ground needs to be thawed and not waterlogged. Late March or April is usually when conditions are right in our area.

Summer: Peak Season

June through August is the busiest time for remodeling on the South Shore. The weather is consistent. Long days mean more productive work hours. Kids are out of school, so some families use vacation time to be out of the house during a disruptive remodel.

The downside: everyone else has the same idea. Contractors are fully booked. Material suppliers have backorders. Scheduling subcontractors (electricians, plumbers, tile installers) gets harder.

If you want a summer start, book your contractor by March at the latest. In towns like Quincy, Weymouth, and Braintree, the demand is especially high because the housing stock is older and more homeowners are upgrading.

Fall: The Hidden Sweet Spot

September and October are underrated for remodeling. The summer rush is over, subcontractors have more availability, and the weather is still good enough for exterior work. Interior remodels (kitchens, bathrooms) can happen year-round, but fall is when you get the best combination of contractor attention and reasonable scheduling.

A kitchen remodel or bathroom remodel started in September is usually done by Thanksgiving. That gives you a finished kitchen for the holidays. This is one of the most popular timelines we see.

Winter: Interior Only

December through February is cold, dark, and wet on the South Shore. Exterior work stops or slows dramatically. But interior remodels can run through winter without weather delays. If your project is a kitchen gut, a bathroom renovation, or opening up an interior floor plan, winter works fine.

Some contractors offer lower pricing in winter because demand drops. If budget is your top concern and the project is entirely indoors, this is worth exploring.

The challenge: material deliveries can be delayed by winter storms. Nor'easters that shut down Route 3A and Route 228 also shut down supply trucks. Build a small buffer into your timeline.

Permits Add Time, So Plan Early

Every South Shore town has its own permit process and its own timeline. Hingham's building department is thorough, and reviews can take three to four weeks during busy periods. Cohasset has strict historic district rules that add an architectural review step if your home is in a designated area. Scituate's coastal properties may need additional review under the Wetlands Protection Act if the project is near the waterfront.

File permits as early as possible. If your contractor submits plans in February, you have approvals in hand by April and can start building when the weather breaks.

How Long Does a Remodel Take?

Timelines vary, but here are rough estimates for common projects on the South Shore:

  • Bathroom remodel: 4 to 8 weeks
  • Kitchen remodel: 6 to 12 weeks
  • Deck (new build): 2 to 4 weeks
  • Home addition: 3 to 6 months
  • Full home renovation: 4 to 9 months

Permits, material lead times, and unexpected issues (old wiring, plumbing surprises, structural discoveries in homes built in the 1950s and 1960s) can extend these timelines.
