How Much Does a Kitchen Remodel Cost on the South Shore?

The kitchen is the most-used room in the house and the one that adds the most value when it is done right. But a kitchen remodel can range from a modest refresh to a full gut job, and the cost varies just as much. Here is what to expect if you are planning a kitchen remodel on the South Shore.

What drives the cost

Scope of work. A cosmetic refresh (new paint, hardware, countertops, and backsplash) costs much less than a full remodel with new cabinets, layout changes, plumbing, and electrical. The more you change, the more it costs.

Cabinets. Cabinets are the single biggest expense in most kitchen remodels, often 30% to 40% of the total budget. Stock cabinets from a home center are the most affordable. Semi-custom gives you more choices in sizes and finishes. Fully custom cabinets are built to your exact specifications and cost the most.

Countertops. Laminate is the least expensive. Quartz and granite are mid-range to high-end. Natural stone, concrete, and butcher block add character and cost. The material, the edge profile, and the total square footage all affect the price.

Appliances. A standard set of mid-range appliances (range, fridge, dishwasher, microwave) costs between $3,000 and $6,000. High-end or commercial-style appliances can push that to $15,000 or more.

Plumbing and electrical. Moving a sink, adding a dishwasher line, or relocating outlets and lighting fixtures adds cost. Any work behind the walls (plumbing, electrical, gas) costs more than surface-level changes because it involves permits, inspections, and trades coordination.

Flooring. New flooring for a kitchen typically costs between $1,500 and $5,000, depending on the material. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is popular for its durability and water resistance. Tile and hardwood cost more.

Labor. A kitchen remodel involves multiple trades: carpenters, plumbers, electricians, tile setters, and painters. Labor is a significant portion of the total cost, especially in the Boston metro area where skilled trade rates are higher than the national average.

Rough cost ranges

Cosmetic refresh: $10,000 to $25,000. New countertops, backsplash, paint, hardware, and possibly a new sink and faucet. Cabinets stay.

Mid-range remodel: $30,000 to $60,000. New cabinets, countertops, appliances, backsplash, flooring, lighting, and fresh paint. Layout stays mostly the same.

Full gut remodel: $60,000 to $100,000+. Everything comes out. New layout, new cabinets, new plumbing and electrical, new flooring, new everything. This is common in older South Shore homes where the kitchen is outdated and the layout does not work for modern living.

How to get the most value

Keep the layout if you can. Moving the sink, stove, or fridge means moving plumbing, gas, and electrical. That adds thousands. If the current layout works, keep it and spend your budget on better cabinets, countertops, and finishes.

Spend on cabinets and countertops. These define the look and feel of the kitchen. Good cabinets last 20 years or more. Cheap cabinets start falling apart in 5.

Do not skimp on lighting. Good lighting makes a kitchen feel bigger, brighter, and more inviting. Under-cabinet lighting, recessed cans, and a pendant over the island are affordable upgrades that make a big visual impact.

Pick your finishes before construction starts. Changing your mind mid-project adds cost and delays. Have your countertop, tile, paint colors, hardware, and fixtures selected before the first hammer swings.

Use a general contractor. A GC coordinates all the trades, keeps the schedule on track, and handles the permits and inspections. Trying to manage subcontractors yourself as a homeowner is stressful and often leads to delays and miscommunication.

Is it worth the investment?

A kitchen remodel is one of the top home improvements for return on investment. Industry data shows a mid-range kitchen remodel returns about 70% to 80% of its cost at resale. Beyond the numbers, a good kitchen makes your home more enjoyable every single day.

On the South Shore, where many homes were built in the 1950s through 1980s with small, closed-off kitchens, opening up the space and modernizing the finishes is one of the best things you can do for both daily living and resale value.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

Timeline depends on the scope. A cosmetic refresh with no layout changes can be done in one to two weeks. A mid-range remodel with new cabinets, countertops, and flooring typically takes four to six weeks. A full gut remodel with layout changes takes six to ten weeks or longer.

The biggest variable is material lead times. Custom cabinets can take four to eight weeks to fabricate. Countertop templates are taken after cabinets are installed, and then the countertop fabrication takes another one to two weeks. Ordering materials early and making all selections before demolition starts keeps the project on schedule.

During the remodel, you will not have a working kitchen for part of the process. Set up a temporary kitchen in a nearby room with a microwave, a coffee maker, and a cooler. Having a plan for meals during the remodel makes the disruption much more manageable.
